DESCRIPTION
Bombyx mori
'Zebra Yellow'
Large silkworms, white with dark brownish rings. Bright but dark yellow cocoons. Fabulous variety. I have found it easy to rear. Univoltine, single brooded. Eggs hibernate.
All of my livestock & silk moths are reared ethical. Ethically as in all the moths hatch from their cocoons & live a full life. The cocoons are processed only after the moths have hatched.
Bombyx mori, the mulberry silk moth, is responsible for 96% of silk production. Thought to have been reared for over 5000 years & originally from China. To date many hundreds of varieties have been developed of one species due to selective breeding over this long period of time. Now a man made domesticated species, the genetics are complex & fascinating. Many European varieties are now dying out & extremely rare as there is almost no silk industry here anymore.
