Bombyx mori
'Escarlata'
A very interesting variety with white silkworms producing good size cocoons. Unusually the male & female silkworms spin different colour cocoons, the females yellow & males pale green. I have found it easy to rear. This variety is from China.
All of my livestock & silk moths are reared ethical. Ethically as in all the moths hatch from their cocoons & live a full life. The cocoons are processed only after the moths have hatched.
Bombyx mori, the mulberry silk moth, is responsible for 96% of silk production. Thought to have been reared for over 5000 years & originally from China. To date many hundreds of varieties have been developed of one species due to selective breeding over this long period of time. Now a man made domesticated species, the genetics are complex & fascinating. Many European varieties are now dying out & extremely rare as there is almost no silk industry here anymore.
